Paul's hair is styled very much in the manner of the Small Faces' Steve Marriott. Twink: "I remember the band during this soundcheck were jamming a Beatles song." The Beatles were an early and perennial influence on Weller.

18. IMPROMPTU ENTERTAINMENT

The Snake Pass, Derbyshire, 25 March 1982.
En route to the Manchester Apollo everyone takes a break. Paul's Dansette and Reggae Disco 45 provides the sounds. Twink: "We had stopped at a pub along the way, It was spooky; we were all sitting outside enjoying the sun when we heard the sounds of The Gift album belting out of a car coming down the road, the guy couldn't believe his eyes when he clocked the Jam touring party in the middle of nowhere".

19. BRUCE FOXTON

Bruce's distinctive bass playing, rich and melodic, was central to the band's sound. After 'The Modern World' he turned from Rickenbacker to Fender basses to enhance this.

20. PAUL - A TOWN CALL MALICE

The video for 'A Town Called Malice', filmed at London's AIR studios in January 1982, was distinctively lit in sharp black and white.
